Multisized product images
Submitted by david on Mon, 19/09/2005 - 01:45.Despite a section in the FAQ detailing this, I still found this took a while to set up. What I wanted was three sizes of image for each product entry - a thumbnail, a medium sized image displayed against the product, and a large one that can be displayed in a new window for anyone who is really interested! It turned out that ZenCart allows you to do exactly that, and this is how to set it up:
Choose the images sizes
Decide on the image sizes that you want to use on your site. The standard aspect ratio is 5 width : 4 height for all scales, and the standard sizes are as follows (width x height):

Why IBM Should Open-Source Improv
Submitted by david on Thu, 21/07/2005 - 14:48.Twelve years ago Lotus launched a brilliant new type of spreadsheet called Improv. To call Improv a spreadsheet is actually rather unfair - it was as different from Excel/123 as a DTP package is from a wordprocessor.
Unfortunately, despite the fact that it was actually easier to learn than a normal spreadsheet, it was too different for those used to traditional spreadsheets. The whole concept of writing a relationship as, say, "gross = net + tax" just didn't have the die-hard techieness of "C1 = A1 + B1". Also I suspect that Lotus marketing just didn't know how to target its market, which was ordinary people who just wanted answers to simple questions, and a few pretty graphs.
Filezilla - Another Great OSS Tool
Submitted by david on Thu, 14/07/2005 - 22:26.Recently, I have been looking around for a decent FTP client, and tried some trial versions of commercial software, but was not overly impressed.
So I had a look on SourceForge, and downloaded the Windows client from the Filezilla project. Easy to install and setup, and really quick, so far I can thoroughly recommend it.
