Easy Eclipse
One of the things I’ve been doing over the last few months (instead of blogging on this site!) is battling with various installations.
One thing that has been particularly time consuming has been trying to build appropriate Eclipse development installations for Java development, Ajax development and Php development. Chasing around the loop of plugin compatibilities was a depressing and deeply unrewarding experience.
While I love Eclipse, and the sheer power that all the plugins provide, trying to get versions of the various plugins needed for a particular project that work together was tricky, to say the least.
Some of these plugins have been co-ordinated as part of the Callisto Project, which is a significant step forward. However it is primarily an effort to co-ordinate the sub-projects hosted under the Eclipse umbrella, rather than an attempt to consolidate those of use to the developer.
This is where the Easy Eclipse steps in. It provides pre-loaded versions of eclipse for various commonly-used developer requirements. It covers various mainstream Java developments, Java Serverside, Php, J2ME, Ruby on Rails, Python, each in a single install package.
The only drawback is that the deployments are all currently based on Eclipse 3.1 - not surprising given the short time since the 3.2 release. And, unless you really need the latest 3.2 features, the benefits of the plugins make a compelling case.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say - the bottom line is whether it works or not. And in my experience is does… extremely well. I was able to build an entire development environment in 30 minutes by installing the XAMPP Lite and the EasyEclipse for PHP packages.
